During this session you will learn about the Kundalini energy which is the primordial energy of pure desire for the connection with our own spirit. This is a motherly energy that has the capacity to nurture our spiritual being and open and cleanse the chakras.
Awakening the Kundalini is at the core of the practice of Sahaja Yoga. The Kundalini rises in the central channel which corresponds to the parasympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic nervous system is autonomous and is not accessible by our conscious mind or our will power. This underlines the spontaneous nature of Sahaja Yoga as a living process that is effortless.
There are many writings on the Kundalini energy – some are misguided and some reflect the deep truth of this motherly force. In the download section below you can find the booklet “The Truth About Kundalini”.
Now watch the video which will give you an introduction to this deep topic:
Footsoak
If our chakras are blocked or under stress then the Kundalini will spend time nurturing, strengthening and relieving them. This is good and will make us feel better, but it makes it more difficult for the Kundalini rise strongly up to our 7th energy center (Sahasrara chakra) which is where we go above the mental level and enter the meditative state of thoughtless awareness. It is easier to meditate deeply if we cleanse our chakras first. The simplest technique to do this is the footsoak.
In the footsoak we use the elements fire, water and earth to absorb tension and blockages from our chakras. Ideally you can take 10 minutes every evening for this practice following these steps:
- Fill a plastic bowl with luke warm water and add a tablespoon of salt
- Prepare a jug to rinse your feet afterwards
- Put a candle or oil lamp in front of Shri Mataji’s picture
- Sit for around 10 minutes in meditation with your feet in the water
Optionally you can do the balancing exercises that you will learn next week during your footsoak - Rinse your feet and empty the water into the toilet
- Meditate

Bhandan
To sustain your meditative state after meditation you can use your hands to raise and tie up the Kundalini. Put your left hand in front of you at the level of the Kundalini. Now slowly raise the left hand whilst circling around it with the right hand. When you reach the top of your head make a final turn and tie a knot. Do this three times, the third time make three knots.

Now we can use our hands to protect subtle system. Make a half-circle or a horse shoe shape over your body with your right hand. The left hand can be held or on your lap with the palm upwards.

You can do the raise your Kundalini and give yourself a bandhan in this way before and after meditation and also before you leave the house.
